On behalf of the Indonesian Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (IAHKS), it is my great pleasure to welcome all participants to the inaugural meeting of the IAHKS, ASEAN Arthroplasty Association (AAA), Congress of IOA and APOA - Hip Section in Bali.

It is the mission of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association to promote and develop the knowledge and skills of hip and knee reconstruction surgery in ASEAN nations. We hope this conference will facilitate improvement in the quality of practice through collaboratively exchanging ideas and experiences in the area of hip and knee surgery. Our aim is for all participants to be exposed to the latest specialist technology and procedures so we are able to provide the best available services for our patients.

It is my aim in becoming part of these two associations to develop hip and knee specialization in Indonesian and the broader ASEAN medical and orthopedic fraternity. The IAHKS has already begun conducting workshops, seminars and a fellowship program to share knowledge and develop the skills of our members. Our aim is to build on existing knowledge and supplement it with the latest techniques and information that are being developed from around the world.

I am personally very honored and humbled that I have been granted the privilege of organizing this inaugural meeting and, on behalf of the organizing committee, I wish to convey our gratitude to the invited speakers for taking the time to come and share their expertise. We have assembled some of the most pre-eminent names in the world of hip and knee surgery to present during the conference. There will be speakers from all the ASEAN countries, United States, Australia and Europe. We have constructed a highly informative program for the three-day conference. It will involve workshops, seminars and demonstrations about current practices, new procedures and developing technology. Our audience is comprised of orthopedic surgeons from many countries around the world. We warmly welcome you all.

I also wish to acknowledge and thank our industry partners, the implant and pharmaceutical companies for their generous support of this conference. It is their support, which enables us to foster international academic exchange and education in our field. They will be using the conference to educate and inform us about the recent technological advances in the products and services that their companies have available to aid us in our work.

Paruhum U. Siregar, MD
The President of APOA Hip Section

Greeting from Asean Arthroplasty Association (AAA)

The concept of an ASEAN arthroplasty association to promote Hip and Knee Reconstruction Surgery was birthed in Shanghai, China in October 2006 during the APAS meeting.

It happened when a group of Philippines orthopaedic surgeons including Dr Antonio Tanchuling and Dr Peter Bernardo (president and vice president of the Philippines Hip and Knee Ssociety) and I were having dinner. We were discussing about the possibility of an association in ASEAN countries where like minded hip and knee surgeons can meet, discuss clinical problems and treatment strategies, and plan activities to promote the subspecialty of Hip and Knee Surgery within the ASEAN nations

In Philippines, the Hip and Knee society was formed 8 years ago and the Indonesian Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons was just formed last year. In Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam, there is no official Hip and Knee Society while in Thailand, it is a section of the main Thailand Orthopaedic Association

So we decided that it will be good to have an ASEAN Hip and Knee society and to form it in soonest possible time. We decided on the name : ASEAN Arthroplasty Association or AAA in short form.

In the meantime, we met with our counterparts in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, and discussed the proposal with them. It was especially providential to discover that my good friend Dr Nicolaas C. Budhiparama was elected as founding President of the Indonesian Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in 2007

I was elected president of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association in March 2007 and organized the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting incorporating the 1st Singapore Orthopaedic Association - Mayo Clinic Hip and Knee Instructional Course in November 2007. My colleagues from the ASEAN nations attended and we had the first business meeting of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association on 15 November 2007 and election of office bearers.

The following were elected:
President : Dr Choon Hin Lai ( Singapore )
Vice President : Dr Nicolaas C. Budhiparama ( Indonesia )
Secretary : Dr Peter Bernardo ( Philllipines )

Country Representatives:
Thailand : Dr Aree Tanavalee
Malaysia : Dr Thirukumaran Subramaniam
Singapore : Dr Lo Ngai Nun
Philippines : Dr Gregorio Azores
Indonesia : Dr Ludwig Pontoh
Vietnam : To be elected in 2008

At the meeting, we decided that there will be a rotating presidency among all the countries and the vice president becomes the next president and the secretary the next vice president. The first scientific meeting of the ASEAN Arthroplasy Association will be organized in Bali, Indonesia by the Vice President Dr Nicolaas C. Budhiparama in 2008. We look forward to an exciting and challenging meeting under his able leadership.

The goals and mission of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association is to promote and share knowledge of hip and knee reconstruction surgery in ASEAN nations. This will be accomplished through annual scientific meetings where we can present our experiences unique to ASEAN region .Having an association of like minded surgeons will facilitate the training of fellows by enabling their attachments to other ASEAN centers as well as having the senior members of the association traveling to teach in other ASEAN nations. This educational exchange will enhance the knowledge and experience of members of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association. Above all, the platform of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association will serve to strengthen the friendship and ties of the hip and knee surgeons in ASEAN

The acronym AAA of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association is of great relevance. In the United States, it stands for the Automobile Association of America and you call for the AAA when your car breaks down. In ASEAN, we call for the AAA when your hips and knees break down.

Dr Choon Hin Lai MBBS, FRCS ( Edin ), FAMS
President ASEAN Arthroplasty Association
